Description:

[Clarity and excitement that feel like lifting a veil! Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, performed with the instruments and performance practices of the time] As part of the activities of the “Mahler Academy Bolzano-Bosen,” founded by Claudio Abbado in South Tyrol, Italy—which was part of Austria until the end of World War I— the Mahler Academy Orchestra provides opportunities for young musicians from around the world to perform alongside members of renowned European orchestras. Its “Originalklang” (German for “original sound”) project involves gathering instruments from around the world (including period replicas) that were in use in Vienna at the time of the premiere (in this case, around 1900), researching and mastering the performance practices of that era, and then performing and recording the works. Following the release of Symphony No. 9 in 2024, which received widespread acclaim worldwide, Symphony No. 5 is now available. For the first time, the recording uses the new Breitkopf edition of the score, which had not yet been published at the time of this recording (to be published in 2025). This edition systematically organizes and incorporates not only the major revisions made by Mahler but also his minor corrections and instructions, with the final revisions dating back to about three months before his death. Furthermore, the recording reportedly draws on the score used by Mengelberg, a close friend of Mahler’s. The string section uses gut strings and wooden mutes, minimizing vibrato while actively employing portamento; the wind section also plays with virtually no vibrato. The recording also emphasizes flexible tempo and rubato. As a result, while the overall sound is exceptionally clear, the music resonates with unprecedented eloquence, making for a truly compelling performance. In the third movement, the first horn stands to the conductor’s left as a soloist, creating an interesting three-dimensional sound effect in contrast to the horn section positioned to his right rear. Philip von Steinecker, who served as principal cellist of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, is a conductor active in both modern and period instrument orchestras. This album is sure to leave a significant mark on the history of Mahler performances. Naxos Japan
