Description:
Sibelius is said to have studied Bruckner's symphonies, and there is a famous episode in which he and Mahler met in person to discuss how a symphony should be. The relatively new live performance from 2012 is also attractive. The performance is, as is typical of Inbal, precise and dynamic, backed up by a meticulous reading of the score. The orchestra sounded thick and resonant, while the soloists were agile and responsive, and the ups and downs and dramatic climaxes of the two movements were superb. The applause that erupted after a moment's pause showed how impressed the audience was. Schumann's Fourth was recorded immediately after the recording with the New Philharmonia Orchestra (NPO) in 1970, and the interpretation is similar. The sound of the orchestra is heavier and more "Germanic" than that of the NPO.The close-up recording of the timpani evokes a beating heart and sometimes sounds eerie.
