Description:
Geha Peixi is one of the leading contemporary Brazilian composers, and he has left behind many masterpieces with unforgettable melodies and exquisite orchestration, including the "Symphonic Suite" already released on NAXOS. The three pieces on this album were all written between 1971 and 1972, and are gems of the musical nationalism he arrived at. The enigmatic titles all relate to Brazil's struggle for independence. With Paisi's vivid brushstrokes, history now rises in sound! (Conductor/Yusuke Kimoto, President of the Villa-Lobos Society of Japan) The 20th century Brazilian composer Cesar Geha-Peixi suddenly attracted attention when his CD of "Symphonic Suites No. 1 and No. 2" (NYCX-10322/8.573925) was praised by "Record Geijutsu" and "Asahi Shimbun", and a new recording of his works has been long awaited. The new recording features works with rhythms and colors that are appropriate for the image of "Latin groove," with dramatic and serious scene descriptions reminiscent of Shostakovich at times. Geha-Peixi learned guitar from his father, a Portuguese immigrant and amateur musician, and studied violin at a music conservatory before becoming a conductor and educator. He has also composed music for radio and television programs and films, and his works incorporate elements of Brazilian folk music. The opening piece, "Retreat from Laguna," is a symphonic suite-like work inspired by a novel about the 1867 war between Brazil and Paraguay. It is a large-scale work with a playing time of over 40 minutes, and is composed of a heroic and uplifting first part, a second part depicting the Brazilian army facing various crises such as fear, famine, and pestilence, and a third part depicting soldiers retreating while mourning the dead, concluding with a lyrical melody that seems to purify the tragedy and wish for peace. The final piece, "Incofidencia Museum. The final piece, "Museo de la Incofidencia," is a tribute to Chiradentes, the leader of the events that triggered the independence movement from Portugal and his tragic death. In both pieces, Geha-Peixi's skill in describing scenes and emotions is on full display, with a frenetic and sometimes ghoulish sound that reaches straight to the listener's heart.Sandwiched between two works with strong tragic elements, "Concertino for Solo Violin and Chamber Orchestra" is a cheerful and highly entertaining concert piece that shows off the virtuosity of Geha-Peixi, who was also a violinist. This work was born out of the "Armorial Movement," which aimed to create new works while incorporating the ethnic culture of northern Brazil, and the music, with its ethnic melodies and rhythms and the soloist's brilliant technique, is enjoyable without logic. The domestic edition comes with a Japanese-language commentary by Yusuke Kimoto (conductor and president of the Villa-Lobos Society of Japan). Naxos Japan
