A story of women who are neglected and suffer, sung by the extraordinary Lindsey Kate Lindsey is a truly 21st-century singer—a multi-talented artist who delivers profound performances of 20th-century songs by composers such as Kurt Weill and Fayrouz, excels in modern French works by Chausson and Ravel, and has recently given magnificent performances alongside leading figures in the world of Baroque opera. This second album with the rapidly rising British early music ensemble Arcangelo features a program of carefully selected Italian Baroque works centered on the ancient Roman emperor Nero—a figure remembered in history as a tyrant and featured in countless literary, theatrical, and musical works—and focusing on the women who were betrayed and tormented by him. Highlighted by the world premiere recording of Alessandro Scarlatti’s chamber cantata *The Death of Nerone*, the program spans a wide range of works—from the first half of the 17th century (including Monteverdi and Monari, also making their recording debuts) , extending to a cantata Handel composed in Italy during his youth—which tells the story of Agrippina, Nero’s mother, consumed by love for her son and a thirst for revenge. Although Arcangelo performs in a small trio-sonata ensemble, the continuo section includes the theorbo and harp, and their rich, varied sound creates a perfect collaboration with Lindsey’s distinctive, memorable voice.
