Paris and Rome. Two choral conductors weave together the music of these two cities, whose spirits resonate across the centuries. Sophie Jannin, conductor of the French Radio Children’s Choir, honed her skills in Sweden and the United Kingdom and is gaining attention for her work conducting choral works across both the UK and France. Here, alongside the young singers of the Versailles Baroque Music Center—who boast highly refined skills—and with the support of veteran choral conductor Olivier Schneebeli, who has long supported the center as a pioneer in the development of early music performance, she presents works from the 17th and 21st centuries written for polyphonic choral styles. Charpentier was a French composer who studied the Italian style while studying in Rome, while Ersan, though a French composer, was born in Rome and spent his boyhood in the Eternal City. The work by Charpentier selected for this program is a rare Mass composed in the polyphonic choral style that Benevoli was developing in Rome at the time. Composed by Elsan for the same ensemble as a joint commission by the Versailles Baroque Music Center and Radio France, the “Hymn of the Three Children in the Blazing Furnace” is a sacred work based on the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament and set to a text by Antoine Godot (1605–1672) based on the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament. Viola da gamba, cornetto, serpent, sackbut, positive organ… Although this is a contemporary composition, it is performed—much like the works of Charpentier—by an ensemble of period instruments. The beautiful sound, imbued with a distinctive otherworldly quality, combines with the stereo effect of the polyphonic chorus to create a unique auditory experience. Naxos Japan
