One of the most serene masterpieces of the French Baroque, Coupland is known as a great master of clavesan (harpsichord) music in Versailles, gathering the elite of the European ancient music world. During his lifetime, he was also active as an organist and left behind not a few masterpieces of church music. Among them, "L'Uson de Tenebre," a masterpiece, is a serene piece of music based on a verse from the Old Testament "Lamentations," which was chanted at dawn during the last week of the Passion Passage, the period of temperance before Easter. At that time, music for the Passion Passage was usually performed with as few instruments as possible and in a simple manner, and there have been many recordings of these three masterpieces, which weave an amazingly rich sound world with solo and double voices accompanied only by basso continuo.
