Pushkin's play "Evgeny Onegin" was begun in 1823 but was not completed easily due to several political pressures, and was eventually completed in 1930. The work underwent a difficult path, with some parts being discarded or published as a separate volume. While Tchaikovsky's opera is well known, Prokofiev's work is an incidental music, with the story entirely narrated, and the episodes are largely taken from the parts that Tchaikovsky did not deal with.
