This is the third album by soprano Asako Motoshima, a singer who has won numerous awards at German art song competitions and takes on a wide range of genres, including Japanese art songs. This album is a collection of covers of Japanese children’s songs. On piano is the veteran Yosuke Yamashita. Children’s songs serve as a source of comfort for everyone, and it is thanks to the duo’s exceptional expressiveness—built upon their vast careers—that listeners can experience the profound depth of life through these songs. Both Motoshima and Yamashita teach at the Kunitachi College of Music. The project began when Yamashita readily accepted Motoshima’s invitation—she had been nurturing the idea for this album. Covering children’s songs is one of Yamashita’s recurring themes. This album represents the culmination of a powerful partnership: Motoshima conveys the charm of these timeless melodies directly, while Yamashita at times accompanies her beautifully and at other times pushes the boundaries of the melodies with freedom. The album also features Yamashita’s past covers of “Desert of the Moon,” “Sand Hill,” and “Soap Bubbles.” Hearing free jazz played within the framework of these songs is a treat. That contrast alone makes it worth a listen. Staying true to the world of children’s songs while remaining smooth yet full of unexpected twists, the album is brimming with the spatial awareness and sensibility that only Yamashita can deliver.
