First Release In 2014, the Berlin Philharmonic will launch its in-house label, “Berlin Philharmonic Recordings.” While the Berlin Philharmonic has been offering a new era of concert experiences through its online video streaming service, “Digital Concert Hall,” “Berlin Philharmonic Recordings” will take a fresh approach to full-scale record production. This new approach is reflected in the product specifications: the inaugural release, “Schumann: Complete Symphonies” conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, includes a Blu-ray Disc Audio featuring a high-resolution 96 kHz/24-bit audio track, a Blu-ray Disc Video with high-definition video—all on a single Blu-ray disc, along with a 2-CD set. Additionally, the package includes a download code for high-resolution audio files of all pieces at 192 kHz/24-bit. A 7-day pass to the Digital Concert Hall is also included, offering a multifaceted experience of the Berlin Philharmonic’s performances. The package features a beautiful, luxurious hardcover design. These performances were recorded live at the Berlin Philharmonie in February and November 2013. Furthermore, in this complete collection, Symphony No. 4 is performed based on the 1841 first draft rather than the standard revised version. Rattle particularly praises this version, describing it as “full of lightness, grace, and beauty.” Speaking at the launch of the label, he stated, “Schumann’s symphonies may not be bestsellers, but for us, they are a very important part of our repertoire.
