Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Description:
This is a glowing record of the Academy of St. Martin's Orchestra (Academy Chamber Orchestra), founded by Neville Marriner in 1959. The original group was a small string ensemble specializing in music of the 17th and 18th centuries, but with the rise of groups specializing in ancient instruments, the group expanded its composition and repertoire, including the addition of wind instruments around the 1970s, and is known to have followed its own unique path. This video shows the wide range of the group's compositions, from Handel to Britten, and you can enjoy a variety of music, including Handel's rhythmic and sophisticated concerto concerto and Britten's very ethereal "Illumination". Rolf Johnson, who sings the solo in this Britten, is a famous English tenor known for his religious music and Schubert songs. His singing is full of flavor and charm.Beethoven's "Grand Fugue" is arranged by Marriner himself, and is wonderfully done with both lightness and gravity. All of the videos are first-time releases.
