Live from the Gasteig Philharmonie, December 1988! ■From the liner notes by Xu Guangjun Although the opening “Prelude to Act I” of *Die Meistersinger* is somewhat disjointed, from the second piece—the “Prelude to Act III”—onward, one can see that this conductor and orchestra are in surprising harmony. This music is played during a scene in which the protagonist—already aware of his advancing age and seeking to escape from distracting thoughts and desires—is lost in deep contemplation. Although it is considered one of the most profound pieces of music in the entire opera, an interpretation as emotionally rich as Svetlanov’s here may be unparalleled. At a slow tempo—one that would likely be difficult to achieve in a theater—he meticulously portrays the emotions swirling within a man’s heart: the sorrow of a person who knows he must depart. The strings, with their rich timbre, at times sound as if they are sobbing, and from just past the 2-minute mark onward, the music is nothing short of a sigh itself. The exceptionally clear tones of the violins and flutes are a beauty unique to an orchestra that has repeatedly performed Bruckner under Cherubini. The subsequent “Lohengrin” Act I Prelude is also breathtakingly beautiful and intoxicating. It is not merely acoustically beautiful. It poignantly conveys the intense longing to escape this ugly world and yearn for a beautiful one. I believe that no other piece expresses the tragedy, glory, and pride of Romantic artists—who despair of the real world, dream of another realm, and are willing to sacrifice themselves for it—as profoundly as the *Prelude to Act I* of *Lohengrin*, and the music Svetlanov performed was precisely that. When the brass section finally builds an overwhelming acoustic cathedral, as if overcome with emotion, what resounds there is truly a single spirit. As with the previous piece, this one also gives the strange impression that time has completely stopped. Compared to this, performances like Karajan’s—no matter how beautiful they may be—are nothing more than mere noise. [Comment provided by Tobu Land System Co., Ltd.] ---
