Description:
Hummel’s “Trumpet Concerto,” performed on the keyed trumpet Music by Cherubini from his Vienna period! Concerto Stella Matutina is an Austrian period orchestra founded in 2005 by members who have performed with world-renowned Baroque ensembles such as the Vienna Concentus Musicus, The English Concert, the Orfeo Baroque Orchestra—all of whom have performed with the world’s leading Baroque ensembles. “Cervini in Vienna” features music from the Viennese period of Luigi Cervini—an Italian composer who made his mark in France—along with related works. It includes the Viennese version of Cherubini’s Paris-era masterpiece *Two Days* (German title: *Die Tage der Gefahr*), the Viennese version of *Rodoiska* (German title: *Zwischenakte*), “Fanisca,” composed in Vienna; the Viennese version of an opera by Gretry, arranged by Anton Fischer, who served as music director at the Theater an der Wien; and works by Cherubini and others featuring excerpts arranged by Ignaz von Seifried, who also served as music director at the Theater an der Wien—all of which were popular French opera overtures and other works at the Vienna theaters of the time. Viennese versions of operas were not merely adaptations with dialogue and lyrics translated into German; the instrumental arrangements were also significantly altered to suit Viennese orchestras. This album allows listeners to enjoy the rich sound of the Viennese version, featuring a robust brass section centered on the trumpet. Another key work on this album is Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto, which features a quotation from Cherubini’s “Two Days” March. Like Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto, it was written for Anton Weidinger, the inventor of the keyed trumpet, and Austrian trumpeter Herbert Walser-Brois delivers a magnificent solo on the keyed trumpet (Rainer Egger/after Alois DOKE, ca. 1823), delivers a magnificent solo. Walser-Brois performs regularly with Anner Seebach’s Vienna Concentus Musicus and Il Giardino Armonico, among others; he is a founding member of Concerto Stella Matutina and a versatile trumpeter active in both classical and jazz music. With the exception of Hummel, all pieces are world premiere recordings. Tokyo M Plus
