Italian composer Amilcare Ponchielli's opera "The Lithuanians" has previously been recorded by Italian opera houses, but now it can finally be heard performed by Lithuanian conductors and opera houses.Although performed in Italian, it is as special as a Japanese opera theater's performance of "Madame Butterfly" in terms of the depth and naturalness of the understanding of the period and customs, and the sympathy for the content depicted. Ponchielli is well known for his opera "Gioconda," especially for "The Dance of Time," but his follow-up to "Gioconda," "The Lithuanians" from 1874, is completely unknown: set in 14th century Lithuania, it is a story of a man who pretends to be a loyal knight to the enemy German knights and finally betrays them to lead his country The play is a blood-boiling drama with a plot similar to a Korean drama, in which a man pretends to be a loyal knight of the enemy German knights and finally betrays them to lead his country, Lithuania, to victory. Based on "Konrad Varenlot" by Adam Mickiewicz, the great Polish poet, Chopin also composed "Ballade No. 1" based on this work. The Italian libretto is by Ghislantzoni. In addition to Ponchielli's characteristic melodies and colorful orchestration, this mature work is full of deep musicality and dramatic climaxes, and it can be said that a performance that shows the true value of the work has finally emerged. The heroine, the prince's sister Aldona, is played by Ylathe Sivyadite-Waller, a soprano who is currently an associate professor of music at Connecticut State University.His grandfather, Jonas Sivjadas, composer of the Soviet Lithuanian national anthem and trombone virtuoso and founder of the "Festival of Songs," has a beautiful, clear voice. The Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Modestas Pitrenas also creates an eloquent backdrop. (King International)
