Black Sugar's debut album from 1971 has been reissued after a long absence! The name Black Sugar was inspired by the situation in Lima at the time, when white sugar was in short supply and only brown sugar was available. At the time, Peru was in the midst of a dictatorship, and any music that did not originate in folklore was under the scrutiny of the government. It was against this backdrop that the group emerged, able to combine the power of rock 'n' roll and funk to capture the energy of youth with the Latin sounds of Peruvian origin at a high level. Black Sugar" (1971) is the first of the two albums that followed.Jaime Delgado Aparicio, music director of Sono Radio, the release company, arranged a grand brass section, as well as percussion. The percussionist Coco Lagos is also featured on the album. The album was released with English credits, and the opening track "Too Late," in particular, reached the top 10 on the Miami charts and became popular in North America as well. Other songs on the album include "The Looser," a lighthearted funk song, "Understanding," a Latin funk song with a break, and "Pussy Cat," a pioneering string arrangement reminiscent of Velocay, all with psychedelic guitar work, gorgeous keyboards, and a hot brass section and percussion. The ensemble's dense intertwining of hot brass sections and percussion is a reminder of the frenzy of nightlife in Peru in the 1970s.
