He has launched his own label, intothefuture, and has begun a project to record all of J.S. Bach's solo keyboard works. So far, the British Suite (KKC-111) and the French Suite (KKC-120) have been sold exclusively in Japan, but starting with the Partitas, they will be released worldwide via the naive label. Tristano has magical fingers that can make phrases and harmonies resonate with the piano's best tone, as if it were a matter of course, and he has an outstanding sense of rhythm and a sense of improvisation as if music is being created on the spot. Even in this Partita, from the Prelude of No. 1, the tone is bursting with limpid and warmth. The Passion-like Prelude of No. 2 is also tinglingly magnificent, yet moves forward without hesitation.When it comes to Bach on piano, Gould's performance stands before the player and the listener like Beethoven before Brahms, or like the Old Testament and the New Testament. There is nothing pedantic about this performance. There is nothing eccentric about this performance, and while it is a very straightforward performance, everything is sharpened to the utmost limit.
