Michelangeli's Bach-Busoni "Chaconne" comes to life in vivid sound on this SACD hybrid disc. Limited edition. A series of major-label PD (copyright expired) masterpieces remastered from original sources. The Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms recordings are from Michelangeli's first EMI SP recordings, and the Schumann recording is a Bi-channel stereo SACD hybrid from a broadcast tape. The Bach-Busoni "Chaconne" is a brilliant performance, but until now, due to the age of the recording, the clear, beautiful sound and sense of color that Michelangeli is known for have not been conveyed to the listener. The new SACD recording of the piece conveys surprising nuances, sometimes organ-like, sometimes violin-like. The technical brilliance is also surprising. Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 3 is so clear that it is hard to believe that it was recorded in 1941. The speed and clarity of touch make you listen to it at once.Schumann's "The Clown at the Carnival in Vienna" is another unbelievable performance, and the SACD version conveys more of the tension and enthusiasm of a live performance.
