Transcending the innovation of the avant-garde to reflect a profoundly human vision Mauricio Kagel’s *Acustica* (1968–70) is a work composed for experimental sound-generating devices and loudspeakers, and stands as one of the most ambitious and radical works of his career. Combining electroacoustic tape material produced at the WDR Studio for Electronic Music with an acoustic performance based on approximately 200 graphic score cards, this work embodies Kagel’s concept of “instrumental theater.” Here, sound, gesture, and the very presence of the performer fuse into a single theatrical and musical act. By employing invented instruments and non-musical objects, the work liberates sound from traditional performance conventions and explores the potential to expand the boundaries of music. Transcending avant-garde innovation, *Acustica* reflects not only Kagel’s chaos but also a deeply human vision. The sounds woven from diverse sources around the world reflect his multicultural background, having grown up in Buenos Aires, transforming chaos into a playful order while highlighting the autonomy of each performer within the collective. Both humorous and sensual, this work rejects ideology and champions a musical “anarchy” that celebrates freedom, individuality, and shared expression—in short, life itself.
