The French master conductor Yann-Pascal Torturier, who left many masterpieces for Chandos during his tenure as Chief Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra (1989-1992) and BBC Philharmonic (1992-2003), presents his latest recording for Chandos with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, of which Torturier is now Chief Conductor. The latest recording with Chandos is a collection of Charles Gounod's symphonies with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, of which Torturier is currently the Principal Conductor. The two symphonies were composed in 1855 and 1856, shortly before the completion of his masterpiece "Faust," and were also influenced by Mendelssohn. These fine works, based on a classical style and sprinkled with elegant and romantic charm, are Gounod's unforgettable works hidden in operas such as "Faust" and popular pieces such as "Gounod's Ave Maria".
