Egberto Gismonti's music performed by a large ensemble led by up-and-coming arranger Geir Wilmer, with Egberto Gismonti himself as a guest! This is an excellent listen for both Brazilian music fans and jazz fans. Originally from the southern Brazilian city of Florianópolis, Gaia Wilmer moved to Rio de Janeiro to pursue her passion for music after graduating with a degree in International Relations. She was asked to fill in for the alto saxophonist in the woodwind ensemble Coracoes Futuristas, and with this group she had the opportunity to collaborate and perform with Gismonchi on a regular basis. She caught Gismonti's attention, which soon developed into a friendship (he would later write a letter of recommendation for her application to Berklee); four years later, she moved to Boston and gave concerts in Boston and New York with her octet while attending the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory (NEC); NEC While earning his master's degree at the NEC, he began arranging Gismonti's music for large ensembles.After completing several arrangements, Wilmer received a grant from the Brazilian Cultural Center for a series of concerts in 2018 to commemorate Gismonti's 70th birthday, with harmonica wizard Gabriel Grossi and cellist/arranger Gismonti, who once collaborated with He was invited, along with six other special guests, including Jack Mollenbaum, to tour 12 concerts in four Brazilian cities, followed immediately by the recording of this album in Sao Paulo. Gismonti's music has been performed by many musicians, but Wilmer wanted to make the songs her own in a unique way, so she began by choosing songs she really liked. Many of the songs were chosen from her favorite album, Em Familia (1981). M-3, the first arrangement Wilmer wrote while still a student at NEC, features playful rhythmic experimentation and exquisite reharmonization to enhance Gismonti's piano, while the final arrangement, M-7, features the rhythms of frevo, a traditional carnival music from northeastern Brazil, and Gismonti's gorgeous piano, The final arrangement, M-7, is an overwhelming presence that makes full use of the frevo rhythm, a traditional carnival music from northeastern Brazil, Gismonti's brilliant piano, and the typical Brazilian big band sound.M-9 is a song with the exact same title composed by Gismonti and composer Luiz Gonzaga for a certain blind man in northeastern Brazil, but the former, with its Middle Eastern elements, and the latter, with its Bayon rhythm, are successfully combined. As a large ensemble tribute to Egberto Gismonti, the skill with which he honors and expands upon the legendary work is a masterstroke. The love and appreciation for the existing work has been beautifully reconstructed into an exciting and enjoyable work by a large ensemble. Gismonti also gave her own stamp of approval, saying, "This music is truly her own reworking of her own composition.
