Twenty-three years of waiting for Mozart's sonata. Finally, a Turkish March by a genius. Following 2015's Beethoven: Pathetique, Moonlight, and Passion, which shocked the classical music world, this is the international release of 2016's Mozart: Sonatas, the second release by the brilliant Russian pianist Valery Afanasyev for Sony Classical. The album is dedicated to Emil Guilleris (1916-1985), a renowned Russian pianist and Afanasiev's teacher. This is Afanasyev's first Mozart sonata recording in 23 years since Sonata No. 14 for Nippon Columbia in 1993, and includes three sonatas: No. 11 with the most famous "Turkish March," No. 8 in A minor, one of only two minor sonatas, and No. 10 in C major, known for its bright and cheerful tone. The album contains three pieces. Afanasyev's teacher, Gileris, had a wide repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music, but in the last 15 years of his life, he devoted himself especially to Mozart and Beethoven, and left many masterpieces. The sonatas here are also Mozart sonatas, including the A minor sonata, which was Guillerais' specialty.The liner notes are written by Valery Afanasyev himself, as usual. Sony Music
