Since 2013, the Berlin Philharmonic's Easter Music Festival has moved from Salzburg to the German retreat of Baden-Baden. This video is from the 2014 festival, and the highlight is the performance by the beautiful and popular cellist from Argentina, Sol Gabetta, who made her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic. She gives an energetic performance of Elgar's romantic cello concerto. Her supple and passionate cello playing is a must-see. Also of note is the elaborate combination of "The Rite of Spring" with Ligeti's "Atmosphère" and Wagner's "Lohengrin" Prelude. The "Atmosphère" was made famous by Kubrick's film "2001: A Space Odyssey. The music, without chords or melody, seems to show the infinite expanse of the universe. Ligeti and Wagner will be performed in succession, with Rattle saying, "The floating sounds of "Atmosphère" and the A major chords of "Lohengrin" will shock the audience.From "Atmosphère," which hints at the mysteries of the universe, to "Lohengrin," the chalice departs on a far journey, leading to "The Rite of Spring," a very exciting program.
