In 2000, the Monteverdi Choir, led by Gardiner, embarked on a pilgrimage tour through 13 European countries and the United States to perform Bach’s sacred cantatas. This pilgrimage was a major event for the performers as well, leading to the organization of a large-scale tour of great religious significance titled “The Pilgrimage to Santiago” in the summer of 2004 (which also served as the 40th-anniversary tour of the Monteverdi Choir, founded in 1964). This CD was recorded shortly before that pilgrimage tour and features a rich selection of works from 16th- and 17th-century Spain and various European countries. The Montserrat Manuscript (commonly known as the “Red Book”) is a manuscript preserved from the transitional period between the era of oral musical tradition and the era of written musical tradition. It is truly a classic among classics, containing music that has been performed throughout Europe for centuries. The other works, having survived the test of time, are likewise filled with universal power and charm. You can fully savor the world of sublime polyphony handed down through the ages, performed by the Monteverdi Choir, renowned for its world-class quality.
