A Turbulent Life and the Grand Motet: The Music of the Unsung Master Henri Demare! Henri Demare (1661–1741) maintained close ties with the French court. Though blessed with exceptional talent, he served as a ghostwriter for Nicolas Goupier, was exiled to a monastery following a romantic affair with his student, Saint-Gobert, disguises, trials, a flight from justice while prepared to face the death penalty, and a life of wandering—only to return to the public stage in 1707 as music director at the court of the Duke of Lorraine. It is, of course, Hervé Niquet—the evangelist of French Baroque—and the Concert Spirituel who will present these large-scale “Grand Motets” in a compelling manner and lead the way in reviving Demare’s music, rich in color and imagination!
