The complete Schubert symphony recordings by the B-Rock Orchestra, led by René Jacobs. This third installment features recordings of Symphony No. 4, “Tragic,” and Symphony No. 5! As with Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3, Jacobs approaches these works as a pair of symphonies, revealing the contrasting aspects of Schubert’s personality and compositional style. Symphony No. 4, “The Tragic,” was Schubert’s first symphony in a minor key, and it expresses its unique worldview through harmonies entirely new to his previous works. Symphony No. 5, on the other hand, displays a brightness and grace reminiscent of Mozart, yet that brightness is also imbued with Schubert’s characteristic shadow. Jacobs delves deeper into the interrelationship between the “Tragic” Symphony No. 4 and the “Lighthearted” Symphony No. 5, presenting a lively and fresh performance alongside the virtuoso ensemble, the B’Rock Orchestra. Founded in 2005 in Ghent, Belgium’s third-largest city, the B’Rock Orchestra specializes in period instruments. Composed of highly skilled musicians who inspire one another musically, the orchestra has gained renown through collaborations with artists such as René Jacobs, Ivor Bolton, and Alexander Melnikov. The orchestra includes many Japanese musicians and made its long-awaited first visit to Japan in September 2019. Capable of producing a versatile range of tones, the orchestra sings freely under Jacobs’ baton, delivering a colorful and stimulating performance.
