Gardiner's astonishing expression of the Stravinsky Monteverdi Chorus in "King Oedipus" and the LSO string section in "Apollo Presiding over the Muse" [The LSO's 70th Anniversary Concert of Gardiner's Birthday] April 25, 2013, "Sir John Eliot Gardiner. In a performance at the Barbican Hall titled "70th Birthday Concert," Gardiner conducted the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and the Monteverdi Chorus in Stravinsky's "Apollo the Muse" and "King Oedipus. Prior to the performance, on April 14, the orchestra's distinguished president, Sir Colin Davis, sadly passed away, and Gardiner's celebration became a memorial service for him as well. Gardiner, Colin Davis, and Stravinsky] In the program of the day's performance, Gardiner wrote the following tribute to Sir Colin Davis. Like so many British musicians, I owe a great deal to the inspiration and guidance of Sir Colin Davis. I was 14 years old when I first sang works by Byrd and Tomkins under Davis's direction. The following year, I mustered up the courage to knock on Davis's door in Holland Park and ask, "How do I become a conductor?Davis's answer was, "First, go home and study The Rite of Spring. First, go home and study The Rite of Spring. I did so. I have in my mind the wonderful recordings of all three ballets he conducted, as well as the concerto "Dumbarton Oaks" and the two symphonies. I received the score of "King Oedipus" as a 21st birthday present. Forty-nine years later, and unfortunately just a week after Sir Colin's passing, I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to conduct this work for the first time. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to conduct this work for the first time, with Sir Colin's wonderful LSO and my own Monteverdi Choir. But it is "Apollo the Muse" that I most associate with Sir Colin. Apollo is famous as the god of the sun, the god of music, and the god of medicine, but Sir Colin himself was an Apollonianfigure of sorts. King International
