Description:
Born in Austria, pianist Paul Wittgenstein lost his right arm in World War I. He commissioned many composers to create "works for the left hand. He commissioned many composers to create "works for the left hand," and the resulting works are performed on various occasions even today. Franz Schmidt (1874-1937) also left him several "works for the left hand," including this "Quintet. Written in 1936, the year before Schmidt's death, it features a more detailed piano part and a more varied sound with the clarinet than the work in G major (1926), which was written in the same form. Schmidt also paid tribute to the left-handed pianist in the last movement of this piece with a variation on a melody written by Wittgenstein's teacher, Joseph Laborde. Recorded in Germany in 2013, performed by the Linos Ensemble. (C)RS
