This album also includes that famous piece from *2001: A Space Odyssey*. It’s the perfect introduction to Ligeti. Ligeti enjoys extraordinary popularity among contemporary composers. While his style is often considered challenging, his music’s infectious groove—reminiscent of rock and fusion—and its unpretentious, macabre quality resonate well with modern sensibilities. This album offers a superb overview of his artistry, spanning from his debut work, “Invention,” composed when he was 25 and living in Budapest, to his final piece, the “Three Etudes” from 2001. What brought him widespread recognition was the use of his unaccompanied choral piece “Lux Aeterna” in Kubrick’s *2001: A Space Odyssey*. This iconic piece, which everyone wants to hear, is of course included without fail. Given that his creative output concluded in 2001, the title pays homage to the film, “Ligeti’s Journey 2001.” While all seven works are compilations drawn from existing albums, the star-studded lineup of performers is particularly striking. The wind quintet piece is performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet, the viola part by Nobuko Imai, and the piano by Ullen, a virtuoso with monstrous technical prowess—there’s no shortage of excellence in these Ligeti works, which are renowned for their technical difficulty.
