Mozart string quartets on CD for the first timeThe Pascal Quartet was founded in Marseille in the early 1940s by Montpellier-born viola player Léon Pascal (1899-1969), and after changing its name to the O.R.T.F. (French National Radio) String Quartet, it disbanded in 1973. The ensemble was dissolved in 1973. In addition to Pascal, who also played viola in the prestigious Calvet Quartet and established the second golden age of the quartet in the 1930s, the quartet features Jacques Dumont, a Paris Conservatory graduate like Pascal, on first violin, Maurice Kurt on second violin, and Robert Salle on cello. The Pascal Quartet, which came to prominence after World War II and was active from the 1940s through the 1950s as a renowned ensemble in the French tradition, began recording before 1945, and their performances of Beethoven, which are among their best-known discographies, are among their best-known.
