Description:

J.S. Bach composed this famous piece for his family's musical education. It is a two-voice Invention and a three-voice Sinfonia. The purity and precision of the music expressed with abstract and universal language has given rise to many arrangements since the 19th century and has been performed in a variety of settings. Bach himself was enthusiastic about reusing and arranging his own and others' works, including those of Vivaldi, Marcello, and Albinoni, and probably had no objection to many such "arrangements. In this recording, the performer himself arranged the Invention for two violins in an unusual form. The independent melody of each part pursues Bach's goal of a "cantabile performance style," which is beautifully achieved through the natural expressiveness of the two string instruments. The Sinfonia was arranged for two violins and viola by Ferdinand David (1810-1873). David was not only one of the leading violinists of his time, but was also closely associated with Felix Mendelssohn, who was deeply involved in the "Bach Renaissance" of the early 19th century and greatly influenced the arrangements of Bach's works.Also included in this recording is Taneyev's very beautiful String Trio Op.21 for two violins and viola. This music was familiarly known to Tchaikovsky as "Russian Bach" because of his deep knowledge and skillful application of counterpoint.
