Description:
A limited-edition 6-pack set of 7-inch singles celebrating the 60th anniversary of The Yardbirds’ 1966 masterpiece *Over, Under, Sideways, Down/Roger The Engineer*! Released in 1966 as *Over, Under, Sideways, Down* in the U.S. and *The Yardbirds* (since widely known as *Roger the Engineer*) in the U.K., this is the only studio album the Yardbirds produced consisting entirely of original songs. Recorded in London during a period when British R&B bands were pushing toward a psychedelic direction, this album captures the band’s transition from their blues club roots to a new, experimental sound driven by Jeff Beck’s innovative guitar work. Songs like “Over, Under, Sideways, Down” and “The Nuts Are Blue” fused blues energy with distortion, Eastern scales, and unique time signatures, defining a sound that would later lead to both hard rock and psychedelia. Beck’s use of feedback, sustain, and fuzz effects infuses the tracks with a sense of invention that influenced everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Page, while songs like “Hot House of Omagararshid” and “He’s Always There” are filled with studio experiments featuring Paul Samwell-Smith’s tape loops, drone guitars, and unforgettable harmonies. All of this is delivered with the relentless energy that made the Yardbirds one of the most innovative bands in mid-1960s Britain, combined with pioneering production, Keith Relf’s haunting vocals, Beck’s bold sound, and the driving rhythms of Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar), Samwell Smith (bass), and the driving rhythms of Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar), Samwell Smith (bass), and Jim McCarty (drums), making this album a landmark in the evolution of rock. Critics have since come to view this album as the band’s greatest achievement and a snapshot of the 1960s moment when pop became Pop Art. To commemorate the 60th anniversary in 2026, it is being released as a limited-edition box set containing six 7-inch color vinyl singles in a gatefold wallet. The set includes lyrics, photographs, and artwork elements from both the original U.S. and U.K. releases.
