The unusually cheerful Fourth Symphony, with a relatively small orchestra for Mahler on the 90th anniversary of Claudio Abbado's birth, is a work that depicts a fairy-tale world. Abbado's interpretation of the score, which is correctly read and ideally balanced in its overall structure, is truly superb, and the performance is full of fresh sensations. Fleming's singing is also worthy of special mention, as is his fill-up of Berg's Lieder, part of a series of symphonic works by Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic that began in 1999.
