Adrian Demoti (born 1985 in Slovakia) studied composition in Brno, Bucharest, and Vilnius. To date, his works have been performed by musicians and ensembles such as Klangforum Wien, Apartment House, Manuel Zullia, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Françoise Rivarain (France), Milan Pará (Slovakia), Ostrava Banda, and the Plural Ensemble (Spain), and his works have been featured at festivals and venues across Europe, the United States, and Canada. He has released nine albums to date. He also contributes articles on contemporary music to the Slovak music magazines *Hudobnyzivot* and *Vlna*. According to Ian Mikiska ( "Grove Dictionary of Music," entry on "Adrian Demochi"), "his music naturally straddles several aesthetic boundaries and can be understood particularly in contrast to the lineage of American experimental music—such as Tenney and Lucier—and European minimalism (Pärt, Górecki) and spectral music. His doctoral dissertation dealt with spectral music, focusing in particular on the works of Gérard Grisey. While Feldman’s influence is evident, there is also a distinct European sensibility present, which at times manifests as nostalgia or elegy. The use of Slovak folk instruments such as the fujara and dulcimer, along with irregular tunings, and the elegiac tendency utilizing historical material also suggest a connection to György Ligeti. However, Demoti tends to extract certain elements and devote himself to them, resulting in music that is entirely different from Ligeti’s—non-rhetorical, serene, and introspective (e.g., *Kvarteto*, *Septett*, *Leseniekzahlbeniu*). “One often has the sensation that echoes of past music can be heard, yet only its core and overall texture—a poetics resonating from afar—remain.” Manuel Zullia was born in Catania, Sicily, in 1962 and has lived in Rome since 1980. He is known for his close collaborations with Alvin Lucier and Salvatore Sciarrino. He has performed with leading Italian composers such as Silvano Bussotti, Aldo Clementi, Franco Donatoni, Luca Francesconi, Adriano Guarnieri, Francesco Pennisi, and Fabio Vacchi. He has been invited to festivals around the world. In 1990, he became a founding member of the ensemble “AlterEgo,” and is currently a member of the PMCE (ParcodellaMusicaContemporaneaEnsemble), based at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome. To date, he has released numerous CDs and records on labels such as Kairos, Stradivarius, Die Schachtel, Mazagran, Mode Records, Megadisc, Touch, Another Timbre, Modern Love, and ANTS Records.
