The highly acclaimed series "History of Russian Piano Trios," performed by the Brahms Trio, Russia's leading chamber ensemble formed in 1990, presents its 10th volume. It highlights the pinnacle of the Russian avant-garde in the 1920s and how its legacy was passed on to the next generation. Roslavets was an avant-garde composer noted even by Stravinsky. His compositional theory, based on his unique "synthetic chords" derived from Scriabin's influence, enabled a wide range of expression from expanded tonality to free atonality. After the Russian Revolution, many piano trios were composed, including works by Roslavets. However, most were rejected by the authorities due to their radical nature and remained suppressed for a long time. This "Piano Trio No. 4," written under persecution, represents the pinnacle of his mature period and is a work featuring intricate polyphony. Dmitri Shostakovich survived this era of oppression and carried forward the achievements of the avant-garde in a different form. His Piano Trio No. 1, composed at age 16, was born from personal romantic feelings. Though parts of the score were lost, it was restored and reevaluated after his death.After the 1930s, while being restricted from overtly avant-garde expression, he established a style that conveyed inner truths through a "dual language" weaving together quotations and symbolism. His culminating work, the Piano Trio No. 2, embodies and sublimates avant-garde discoveries, remaining a defining masterpiece of the 20th century that exerts a powerful influence to this day.
