Aubert's operas used to be as popular as Rossini's and Suppé's works. Tchaikovsky is said to have highly praised them, but nowadays they are rarely performed except for a few performances. The music here includes overtures to Aubert's operas and ballet music, including "The Female Angel," which has been called Aubert's greatest masterpiece. Each piece has the graceful melody, delicate sound, and lightness of music that are typical of Aubert.An oddity is the Divertissement, which was inserted into the second act of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" when it was performed at the Paris Opera in 1866. The music is a medley of motifs from Mozart's minor works, and ends with the famous Turkish March. Conducted by Dario Salvi, a leading conductor in this field. (Naxos Japan)
