Mendelssohn, a child prodigy who displayed musical talent from an early age, began playing the piano at the age of six, and at ten studied with Carl Friedrich Zelter, a well-known master of counterpoint. This is said to have led to a dramatic development of his compositional technique. This album contains works from his early to late teens. The lively music of the "Sonata," which is more influenced by Weber and Hummel than Baroque music, boasts a high degree of perfection that is hard to believe that it was written by an 11-year-old boy. The other pieces are also attractive with stylish phrases and light passages. The six fugues in the latter half of the work reveal a great interest in Bach, and the short themes develop freely to form wonderful music. Naxos Japan
