Solomon's Knot
Description:
[A Newly Restored Version of a Notable Bach Work, Conducted by Jonathan Selz] Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen (1694–1728), a ruler in central Germany, welcomed the young Bach as his Kapellmeister and provided him with the opportunity to compose many masterpieces during the period leading up to his appointment at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig in 1723. This recording features a new reconstruction of the memorial piece Bach composed after his appointment in Leipzig for the count’s funeral. Although the circumstances surrounding the funeral—which took place in March of the year following the count’s death—and the prayer verses (lyrics) are known, the original score has never been found; today’s Bach scholars believe it was composed by repurposing music from the *St. Matthew Passion*, which premiered in April 1727, and Cantata BWV 198, written for the memorial service held that same year at the University of Leipzig for the Electress of Saxony and Queen of Poland. Following A. Parrott’s 2010 recording (Avie Records) and R. Pichon’s 2014 recording (harmoniamundi) based on M. Jordan’s reconstruction, this release features a reconstructed violin solo version of the famous Toccata and Fugue, BWV 565, as well as Chad Kelly—known for his ensemble arrangements of the *Goldberg Variations*—adopts a new reconstruction (which differs from the Pichon recording in the order of the movements) based on A. Parrott’s theory and incorporating his own additions. Under the baton of Jonathan Sels—who has been serving as conductor of the Monteverdi Choir since March 2025—the elite British ensemble Solomon’s Knot delves into the work’s true essence with an ambitious interpretation. As familiar melodies appear one after another, poignant emotional expression—beginning with the oboe solo in the opening Sinfonia (instrumental ensemble)—permeates the entire work, and the delicate use of sound—such as in the violin and lute solos—creates a beautiful contrast with the intense songs of lament and the sweet phrases, making for a truly compelling performance.
