The Van Caic Quartet, a French string quartet founded in 2012, has been steadily recording on the ALPHA label, focusing on Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn ...... and other orthodox repertoire. This recording, their first French music album since their 2017 album (ALPHA 295), which included quartets by Debussy and Ravel and an important work by Chausson, is a collection of small pieces that are different and more elegant than before. This album is a "collection of songs without words" featuring masterpieces of modern and contemporary French songs for piano and piano arranged for string quartet, with small pieces dedicated to each of the five composers by Baptiste Trotignon, a pianist-composer who crosses genres. The music is transposed from the texture of the piano, which decays from the moment a key is struck, to the sound of the strings, which flexibly draws intonation like the human voice, and their performances here and there shed light on the unexpected charms hidden in the original compositions. Their performances are not merely superficially stylish, but are backed by deep insight, and will provide you with a stimulating listening experience even if you take a step beyond comfortable listening. The many tribute works to Trotignon, who is also active in the jazz scene, are also interesting enough to make you wonder "why that is so" and each is stylish, intelligent, and beautiful. The Van Cuyck Quartet performed part of this program at the Salvia Hall in May 2024 to great acclaim. (Naxos Japan)
