The delicate charm of music from a fleeting era, woven from the tones of a period harp Maïris de Villette, who has been enlivening the French opera scene in recent years with a focus on Baroque works, presents a program in collaboration with period harpist Clara Isambard. The theme of this program is the First Empire—that is, the era of Napoleon. In the late 18th century, Marie Antoinette enlivened cultural salons dominated by women, significantly elevating the status of the harp at their center. Later, during the era when Napoleon became Emperor of France, the harp continued to captivate intellectuals—who viewed it as an “instrument that has existed since time immemorial”—by fueling their longing for ancient empires. While the virtuosity of numerous talented musicians—such as Nadelman, the son of an instrument maker, and the virtuoso Bouxa—captivated audiences, the harp also gained immense popularity as an accompaniment instrument for delicate love songs. Focusing on the works of Sophie Gayou—a precocious female composer who began publishing her compositions in her teens during the Revolutionary period—this program features the Jadan brothers, who excelled in this genre, Martini, known for “The Joy of Love,” as well as harpists and Mozart—who gained international fame shortly after his death—all of whom excelled in this genre. They have carefully selected a variety of melodies that comforted the hearts of many people bewildered by the turmoil in early 19th-century France, allowing listeners to savor them at their leisure. The harp used in this recording is also from that era. Please take your time to fully savor this world of music—one of the utmost delicacy—that would be a shame to leave buried in history, overshadowed by Cherubini’s rescue operas and Beethoven’s symphonies.
