During World War II, Liza worked at the Auschwitz concentration camp. After the war ended, she became the wife of a diplomat and boarded a ship bound for Brazil. There, she met a woman named “Marta,” whose appearance was the spitting image of a woman who had been sent to the gas chambers at the concentration camp. As Liza recalled her nightmarish life during that time, she gradually began to lose her mental stability and became tormented by the ghosts of her past. The experiences of Posmuiši, the author of this story who barely survived the concentration camp, overlapped with those of Weinberg, who had lost his entire family to persecution; the subject matter must have been deeply personal to him as well. With Shostakovich’s guidance, he completed this opera in just one year. However, the work was never staged during the Soviet era; it was not until ten years after his death that a concert performance took place in Moscow, and it was not until 2010 that the world premiere on stage finally took place at the Bregenz Festival. This video is a recording of the 2021 production at the Graz State Opera. In Naja Roschke’s production, the entire stage is set in a dark gray hue, carefully depicting the intense emotions and inner conflicts that arise between Liza, a former Auschwitz guard, and Marta, a Polish prisoner, as they find themselves aboard a liner bound for Brazil. The intense, repeated timpani strikes at the beginning of the work foreshadow the turbulent story, and a highlight is Kaiser’s expressive singing as she portrays Liza, who descends into madness following a seemingly trivial trigger. Lothar Kurtich, who has served as Music Director of the Graz State Opera since 2020, is a conductor who specialized in contemporary music with the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin in the 1990s.
