This is the fifth installment in the organ edition of the complete Bruckner symphonies, currently being produced in anticipation of the 200th anniversary of Bruckner’s birth in 2024. The series is sponsored by conductor Christian Thielemann. The arrangement of Symphony No. 4, “Romantic,” was made by Thomas Schmeckner, born in 1964. He studied organ at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and, while teaching at various institutions, serves as the organist at St. Anne’s Church. This arrangement is based on the 1878–80 version (Second Draft), which is frequently performed by orchestras. Given the popularity of this piece, the final result is highly anticipated. In this series, titled “Bruckner Fenster = Bruckner’s Window,” new works inspired by Bruckner’s music are also included. This volume features “Morgenglanz der Ewigkeit” (Eternal Morning Glow) by German composer Philipp Mainz, who also appeared in Vol. 0. Guided by an opening sound reminiscent of the celesta, this dreamlike work features fragments of Bruckner’s music appearing here and there, and concludes with a beautiful and solemn chorale. The opening track, “The Magic of the Evening,” is a choral work by Bruckner, arranged by the performer, Hans-Jürg Albrecht. Here, too, the human voice is masterfully transposed to the organ. One of the charms of this series is that a different organ is used for each recording. The organ used for this recording at the Vienna Konzerthaus is one of Europe’s largest concert organs, featuring five manuals and 116 stops. It is characterized by a clear resonance distinct from that of a church organ. The Japanese edition includes a Japanese commentary by Yutaro Ishihara, a member of the International Bruckner Society.
