Adolf Barjanski was born in 1851 in Odessa, Ukraine, into a wealthy Russian-Jewish family. He received his musical education in Vienna, Paris, and Leipzig, studying piano under Karl Reinecke and Salomon Jadaszon. Although he left behind only a small number of works, his piano pieces—which adhere to classical forms—are all rich in individuality and charm. The second volume focuses primarily on two sonatas. The Second Sonata, which begins with a rippling melody, is notable for the simple, serene atmosphere of its third movement. The final movement is sprinkled with varied musical ideas reminiscent of Schumann. The Third Sonata, which begins with a solemn chorale, soon gives way to flowing passages; the first movement, brimming with lyricism, occasionally reveals modern harmonies, followed by a lively second movement reminiscent of a scherzo, and then a subdued third movement. and a final movement with captivating, ever-changing musical ideas—this is a work with many highlights. “Moderato” is a leisurely piece reminiscent of early Scriabin. The performer is Yulia Severs, who studied at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and founded the Aurora Quartet and the Aurora Duo. She is a pianist with an active career, having given the world premiere of Shchedrin’s works in the composer’s presence. Naxos Japan
