The latest release from Trio con Brio Copenhagen, acclaimed for its album of Beethoven's series of piano trios, is a collection of Russian works by Arensky, born in 1861, a composer who studied under Rimsky-Korsakov and whose works are in the Russian Romantic tradition. written in 1894. This piano trio is in memory of the famous cellist Karl Davidov, and is meant as a memorial work for a musician in the vein of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 1 was born in the year of Arensky's death, and was a 17-year-old work. It is reminiscent of the film music he was passionate about at the time, yet is skillfully composed. On the other hand, No. 2 is a memorial to his close friend Ivan Sorelchinsky in the Russian tradition. The final movement, with its effective use of Jewish melodies, symbolizes the period in which it was composed and also Shostakovich's personal grief. Naxos Japan
