(Nikolai Kapustin) Known not only as a classical composer but also as a composer of symphonic jazz, Nikolai Kapustin is often called "a Russian in Gershwin's clothes. Most of his works are influenced by jazz, and his style is unique, blending traditional elements from Bach to Prokofiev and Stravinsky in a jazz style. Although he left more than 160 compositions during his lifetime, he was not recognized as a composer until nearly the 21st century. Capustin himself had no desire to be in the limelight, and was happiest when he was writing in his apartment, far from the public eye. All three works on this album also have a jazz flavor, especially the piano concerto, which is full of gorgeous melodies with advanced techniques, but in fact every note is notated, leaving no room for improvisation.Here we can enjoy a brilliant performance supported by a keen sense of rhythm by Frank Duprey, who originally studied jazz percussion before turning into a pianist. The Violin Concerto, with its bewitching violin melody and melting piano tone, and the Chamber Symphony, with its high-tension percussion supporting the entire piece, are also included in this disc.
