Murcia, Santiago de (1673-1739)

Description:

The Spanish guitarist Santiago de Murcia, who served the Spanish royal family around 1700 and also worked in Mexico from 1718 to 1731, is one of the most important guitar artists of the 18th century, along with Gaspard Sanz and his French contemporary Robert de Vizée. He is one of the most famous composers of the late Baroque period who wrote solo guitar music, along with his elder brother Gaspar Sanz and his French contemporary Robert de Vizier, whose works have been enthusiastically taken up by the "guitar god" Andrés Segovia, and are no stranger to modern guitar players. But he is not a stranger to modern guitarists either. However, he lived 300 years ago, when the five-course baroque guitar was the standard. This album examines the music of Santiago de Murcia from the world of the ancient instruments, and reveals a sound world that cannot be explained by the wild and folkloric atmosphere that one might associate with Spanish-speaking music, but is unique to a time when Italian music was having a great impact on Spain and the rest of Europe. The "Spain-Italy" relationship is a very important one. Spain and Italy are probably the origin of the album title, "Two Souls. The two arrangements of Corelli's violin sonatas are also very interesting, while there is a lot of music specific to the Spanish-speaking world, such as jacaras, follias, fandangos, etc. The performance by Italian virtuoso Stefano Maiorana (an old-time string player who studied under Andrea Damiani and Paul Oddet, who greatly contributed to the development of the baroque guitar world) using 17th century model instruments is also excellent. The original commentary (English, French, Italian, and Western) is also worth reading, as is the extensive bibliography. Naxos Japan
