Jaroslav Krček is known as one of the leading figures in contemporary Czech music, having studied composition at the Prague Conservatory, served as music director of the CD label Supraphon, and worked at a Prague broadcasting station. This album contains four recently composed string quartets. The first, written in 2017 in response to a request from the Czech Philharmonic String Quartet, is a familiar piece with plenty of folk song-style material in the third movement. The success of this piece led Kruczek to write the next three pieces in rapid succession. The fourth piece, No. 4, is particularly original in its use of avant-garde sounds, but also in the way the slow and fast tempos intersect and the "Janacek-like melodies" that engage in dialogue sometimes show their faces.
