Hana Vu's emotional sound is a haunting reminder of the loneliness of today's world, with a sense of romanticism and a sense of seeking. Universal yet elusive, youth rules us all. We are often told that it is a series of breathless novelties and ecstasies, and that it is over in a flash. But rarely do we hear of the sadness embedded in it. If the fragility of youth is part of its magic, doesn't it make sense that an integral part of that experience is mourning the days piling up behind you? Says Hana Vu over candy in her Los Angeles sun-striped apartment. 'Now that I am trying to become a more competent and mature human being, I am saddened by my naivete. This profound duality is reflected in Hana Vu's latest album, Romanticism.She has been making music since high school, releasing her full-length debut and several EPs of abstract, emotional, glowing, brooding anthems. On this release, "Romanticism," her guitar-driven synth pop and plump contralto (a woman's lower register singing) fill out the coming-of-age experience with deft and melancholy precision. These songs pulsate with meaning and playfulness, supported by her powerful, sonorous voice. On songs like "22," her voice is a low, silken boom, dissonant guitars underscoring adolescent angst and dissolution; on songs like "Hammer," she sings muscular, soaring songs with soaring bass layered over clipped guitar and mandolin strums. As an artist aware of her contradictory obsessions with growth and humanity, she juxtaposes these truths. Romanticism is reminiscent of guitar-heavy late-period indie rock, layered with synth bass and futuristic expansiveness; Hana Vu says, "I'm trying to convey my point of view as boldly as possible, and I think that's what I'm trying to do with this album," she says.It succinctly expresses the fact that I am young, yet deeply saddened," he says.
