Description:

The series of recordings of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas by Irina Medjieva, which started in 2008 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Wakabayashi Studio, has been highly acclaimed, with all four recordings released to date winning "Record Geijutsu The fifth recording in the series, which marks the end of the series, is the fifth volume in the series. The fifth volume of the series features six sonatas from the early to the late period. (No. 23 "Passion" and No. 28 were recorded for the second time, and No. 31 for the third time. No. 31 is the third recording). Medjieva has been steadily deepening and evolving with each successive recording in the series, and this time she has grown even more matured. The sense of speed in the finale of No. 18 (Presto con foco), the expression of a huge sense of scale in both end movements of "Passion," and the deep spirituality and rigorous polyphony of the late sonatas are all "Beethovenian" in nature. The singing in the slow movement is also full of clean lyricism. The sincere attitude of this young Russian artist, who is trying to get to the heart of Beethoven's music without any pretense, makes us aware once again of the splendor of his music. This is a magnificent conclusion to the series in which the young Russian virtuoso has given his all. In the exquisite variations in the second movement of No. 30 and the elaborate fugue in the last movement of No. 31, the composer's technique matures and deepens, and the pianistic effects, which sometimes even playfully interweave, reveal the supreme state of purity that the mature Beethoven had attained. I congratulate Medjieva on the completion of her Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas, and sincerely hope that Beethoven lovers and piano fans not only in Japan but around the world will enjoy listening to this album.
