If my previous album, Flow, was a “chapter about surrendering to the flow,” then self is a “chapter about realizing that both light and shadow are all part of who I am.” The moment her dream came true, she encountered a “side of herself she had yet to see”—the “inner universe” she discovered at the end of her world tour. Transcending the boundaries of genre, country, and race, it showcases the current state of soul music on a global scale. Spanning neo-soul, indie R&B, Afrobeat, house, and spiritual jazz, Nao Yoshioka’s voice weaves them all together like a single thread. The connections and trust she built during the tour for her previous album, Flow, which took her to 11 countries, made this album possible. The Evolution into a Soul Singer-Songwriter—An Awakening in Her 13th Year After a 13-year career, Nao Yoshioka is now making a definitive transition from soul singer to soul singer-songwriter. From singer to storyteller, and then to songwriter. She has spent over a decade honing her ability to translate her own messages into music. The fruits of her labor became evident in a special studio connected to a Manhattan rooftop, when Bilal—who had traveled an hour and a half from Philadelphia—entered the booth with a notepad and pen in hand. Lyrics were woven on the spot based on the topline Nao had created, and his overwhelming vocals were layered on top. While continuing to perform on stages around the world as a live artist, her expression as a songwriter has deepened even further.
