A Schumann album brimming with Sol Gabetta’s charm. Cellist Sol Gabetta is so highly regarded and popular that she has been called “the modern Jacqueline du Pré.” In the first half of this Schumann album, she performs with pianist Bertrand Chamayou. In these recordings, she uses a cello made by Matteo Goffriller in 1725 and a fortepiano made by J.B. Streicher in 1847 to deliver a romantic performance rich in dynamic variation. In the cello concertos that make up the second half, she is supported by Antonini and the Basel Chamber Orchestra. The ensemble features period brass instruments and timpani from Schumann’s era, along with gut strings for the string section. While the woodwinds use modern instruments, they boldly incorporate period performance practices. Here lies the ultimate “radiance” and “elegance” of the gut-string tone, achieved through subtle vibrato. In this performance, Gabetta plays a 1759 G.B.
