Arturo Toscanini left an enormous mark on the history of 20th century music. In the first half of his life, he performed mainly in European and American opera houses, and in the second half of his life, as a concert conductor, he performed a wide range of repertoire at an extremely high standard. The NBC Symphony Orchestra from 1937 is one of the earliest successful examples of media mixing in the art of music. Toscanini recorded "Otello" at the age of 80, having participated in its premiere at La Scala in 1872 as a 19-year-old cellist and receiving direct performance advice from Verdi.
